As we approach the last few weeks of the year, here at SAF we have been reflecting on a successful office wellness campaign.
At the beginning of 2017, we took the decision to instil a culture of wellness into the SAF office after receiving a phenomenal response. We asked for volunteers to form a Wellness Team, and eventually whittled this down to a group of 5 who would brainstorm ideas to increase staff’s overall health and well-being and spearhead activities to get the SAF team moving!
The first thing we did was introduce a fruit bowl at the office to encourage healthy snacking as opposed to over-indulging on crisps and chocolate.
We then went on to offer a gym membership, meaning staff are now able to use the facilities of a local hotel during their lunch breaks or after work and at weekends.
We began the year with a Step challenge, with each member of the team challenged to complete 8,000 steps per day throughout February.
Some embraced the challenge more than others, but our overall winner was Lorraine Johns who stormed to victory with an average of 9880 steps per day.
We extended the challenge into March but cruelly increased the number of steps by 10% for each member of staff’s February total. Lorraine was once again victorious in this challenge and went on to take the title of ‘Queen of the Steps’. Each member of staff who was successful in reaching their personal target was rewarded with the choice of a Fitbit or an extra day’s holiday.
During February we also did a team walk up Moel Famau, the highest hill within the Clwydian range in North Wales. A total of 12 members of staff took part in the walk.
Next, we decided to quicken the pace and headed off for a bike ride. The relatively-flat Wirral Way was perfect for this and with perfect cycling conditions on the day we managed to rack up a total of 16 miles. Despite several members of staff being caked in mud by the end of the ride we rewarded ourselves with fish and chips!
More recently the team have completed plank challenges and embarked on another walk, which this time took us along the Wirral Coastal Path. Next up is a trip to local trampoline park FlipOut, which is sure to take us back to our childhood.
Overall the office wellness campaign has been a fantastic addition to SAF’s staff benefits programme and one that has certainly been embraced by the majority of staff. We have taken part in events that staff wouldn’t have otherwise had the time to fit into a normal working week and have hopefully increased and raised awareness of well-being and fitness.
Nest year we will be looking to increase mindfulness and activities around mental well-being as well as physical well-being.
